S ummary High temperatures (10 to 30 °C) promoted after‐ripening of fresh, imbibed seeds of Veronica hederifolia L. and overcame dormancy of seeds buried in the soil. Low temperature (4 °C) inhibited after‐ripening and also tended to induce dormancy in physiologically non‐dormant seeds. This response, however, was not sufficient to account for the increase in dormancy which occurs during late autumn and winter in seeds buried in the field.
