S ummary An apparatus is described for simulating the natural environmental conditions relating to large thallose lichens, to enable their rates of nitrogen fixation to be estimated using 16 N 2 enriched nitrogen gas. Daylength, temperature, light intensity, thallus moisture and carbon dioxide concentration can be controlled and seasonal conditions can be reproduced. The rate of long term 15 N 2 incorporation can be compared with that of acetylene reduction measured over short periods and the relationship established. Details of materials and suppliers are given.
