SUMMARY The history of the application of palaeobotany to the development of Pleistocene stratigraphy in Britain is reviewed. Problems arising in the interpretation of pollen assemblages are discussed from palaeobotanical and stratigraphical points of view. Problems of correlation and nomenclature are also discussed.
