SUMMARY The growth and development of Puccinia hordei Otth. race F on leaves 3 and 5 of barley varieties Gold and Peruvian, normal and slow rusters respectively, were compared using histological and biochemical techniques. Assays of chitin and mannan contents agreed well with histological observations of infection and were linearly related to each other. The use of these and other compounds as indices of fungal growth is discussed.
