S ummary The cellular mechanisms involved in the storage and synthesis of secretory proteins in the glands of the carnivorous plant Dionaea muscipula were examined. Important roles for a sub‐compartment of the vacuole and smooth endoplasmic reticulum were demonstrated by high‐resolution autoradiography and cytochemistry. It is shown, for the first time in a carnivorous plant, that de novo protein synthesis occurs during the secretory phase of activity and that part of this protein is directly secreted.
