S ummary Pollen analyses of post‐glacial sediments from the marine Lough Ine and freshwater Ballyally Lough are described. Lough Ine was found to have been formerly a freshwater basin. The oldest sediments, banded clays with no microfossils, were probably glacial outwash deposits. These were overlain by post‐glacial sediments; late‐glacial deposits were missing. By comparison with radiocarbon‐dated diagrams from other sites the marine transgression is tentatively dated at c. 4000 b.p. The lowest sediments from Ballyally Lough can be assigned to Mitchell's zone VI, the Boreal period. The post‐glacial vegetational development of both loughs and the surrounding area is discussed.
