S ummary Mycorrhiza of the ptyophagous type was formed by Favolaschia dybowskyana (Singer) Singer in axenic culture with protocorms of the terrestrial Japanese orchid, Bletilla striata (Thunb.) Rchb. f. The growth of inoculated protocorms was much greater than uninoculated material, which was unable to develop on cellulose agar. The growth rate of the inoculated material on this medium was almost the same as that of material in sterile culture on full nutrient medium. Infected Bletilla material was studied by light and transmission electron microscopy and information obtained, together with previously published data, support a non‐specific relationship between the symbionts.
