SUMMARY A marked seasonal variation in wax production was observed by scanning electron microscopy and confirmed by extraction and weighing the wax. Contact angles of water droplets on films of this extracted wax also showed seasonal variation as well as differences between foliage of different ages. This suggests that the chemical composition of the wax could vary in a like manner. Trichome development patterns were less distinct, but there was some indication of progressive attrition with increasing tissue age.
