SUMMARY In the thick cutinized outer epidermal wall in the stem of Spartocytisus filipes radiating microchannels have been observed. The structure of the wall and the microchannels have been investigated by histochemistry, polarized light, and electron microscopy. The micro‐channels contain pectic substances and branch richly. The structure of the wall and the microchannels are discussed in relation to the ecology of the plant.
