SUMMARY Following mechanical stimulation, the leaves of Mimosa close and their photosynthetic rate declines by 40%. The translocation rate remains constant during leaf closure suggesting that blockage of transport by rapid sieve plate callose formation is not occurring. The rates of photosynthesis and translocation do not appear to be closely coupled.
