SUMMARY The ultrastructure of the tactile papillae on tendrils of Eccremocarpus scaber was studied. The protoplast is highly vacuolated. Ovoid osmiophilic bodies are regularly scattered between cell wall and plasmalemma. The cytoplasm is rich in organelles, especially endoplasmic reticulum, dictyosomes, golgi vesicles and mitochondria. Chloroplasts contain poorly developed grana. Abundant plasmodesmata were observed in the walls between tactile papillae and epidermal cells and in the anticlinal epidermal cell walls. The possible functional significance of these structures is discussed.
