SUMMARY The botanical evidence for the presence of inland saline areas during the Devensian (last glacial) stage is considered. It is suggested that this evidence need not be interpreted as demonstrating the existence of saline conditions. Aspects of the present day ecology of some of the species regarded as halophytic are discussed and alternative hypotheses to explain their occurrence under full glacial conditions are advanced.
