SUMMARY The secretion of ions from salt glands and the salt content of Sporobolus arenarius leaves were investigated. The NaCl concentration of the test solution was positively correlated with that of the secreted fluid and of the leaves. Electron probe analysis revealed different contents of sodium, potassium and chloride in mesophyll and gland cells. Variations in the relative and absolute content of these ions suggest that an active secretion mechanism is located within the gland cells.
