SUMMARY In continuous light the time course of stomatal opening in Tradescantia virginiana was substantially modified by the length of the preceding night, e.g. the time to maximum opening was decreased as the preceding night length increased. This response can be correlated with an underlying stomatal rhythm in darkness. The possibility that this rhythm is due to changes in osmotic relations between guard and epidermal cells is discussed.
