Summary Excised pseudolaterals of Heterosiphonia plumosa showed rhizoid formation from surviving basal cells and regenerate formation either from the region of the rhizoid in close proximity to a basal cell, or directly from the basal cell. Survival of pseudolaterals and regenerate formation was obtained with fluorescent illuminations of 205 and 270 lux, but the majority of detached filaments failed to survive in illuminations of 320 lux and above, and at 105 lux and in the dark.
