S ummary Five numerical zonation methods have been applied to two sets of pollen data from deposits of Flandrian age at Scaleby Moss, Cumberland and Red Moss, Lancashire. The zonations suggested by these methods generally correspond to the conventional Flandrian pollen zones with the exception that the ‘elm‐decline’ is not consistently distinguished as a zone boundary. Reasons for this omission are discussed in terms of the weightings implicit in the various numerical methods.
