SUMMARY RNA metabolism in the cotyledons of Phaseolus vulgaris L., cv. Taylor's Horticultural, has been examined as well as the composition of the RNA synthesized during embryogeny and germination. The cotyledons cease RNA synthesis during maturation at the onset of dehydration. During germination RNA synthesis resumes; however, organellar rRNA is the major class of RNA synthesized. The total RNA content of the cotyledons doubles during the first 3 days of germination and then declines as the cotyledons senesce. RNA synthesis is restricted to periods of near normal water content.
