Summary Chromosome counts on twenty‐two taxa of Silene L. confirmed that the genus is dibasic with ×= 10 or 12. Most European species have 2 n = 24, but species of Section Conomorpha have 2 n = 20. No cytodemes were found in any annual taxa, but within the perennial S. vulgaris the Mediterranean subsp. macrocarpa is tetraploid with 2 n = 48. Karyotype comparisons showed the frequent presence of a satellited chromosome, and a large variation in chromosome size between species.
