SUMMARY In the lichen Lichina pygmaea , there are numerous vesicles in the fibrillar sheath of the phycobiont (a blue‐green alga of the genus Calothrix ). The possible function of these vesicles is discussed in connection with the metabolic exchange between the symbionts.
