S ummary Seeds of Stachys alpina are dormant, but can be induced to germinate either by treatment with gibberellin or by the removal or perforation of the integuments. Incubation of intact seeds and seeds with punctured integuments in increased oxygen tensions failed to stimulate germination above that observed in air, while after‐ripening in dry storage, incubation in continuous illumination and exposure to alternating temperatures were not effective in inducing germination of intact seeds. However, chilling treatments of up to 20 weeks' duration resulted in 20–30% germination. The significance of the response to gibberellin and of the role of the integuments in controlling dormancy are discussed.
