S ummary Data on the proportion of heartwood formed in a conifer (Pinus radiata D. Don) and an angiosperm ( Acacia mearnsii de Willd.) are presented. A statistical relationship between diameter and amount of sapwood is derived, and a possible causal relationship between the ratio of wall material to space and the formation of heartwood, is discussed. Selective attack by defoliating insects on a physiological strain of A. mearnsii is recorded.
