S ummaryDeschampsia flexuosa and Scabiosa columbaria , species with low relative growth rate and small growth response to phosphate concentration contain a greater proportion of inorganic phosphate than organic phosphate. By contrast, Urtica dioica and Rumex acetosa with high relative growth rates and high phosphate response contain more organic phosphate, particularly organic insoluble phosphate, especially when grown in low phosphate concentrations. It is concluded that the evidence from the present and previous work indicates that the growth response to phosphate is a reflection of relative growth rate, that is, demand for phosphate in growth.
