SUMMARY Nitrogen fixed by, and secreted from, the blue‐green algal component of Peltigera aphthosa to the thallus has been shown to be utilized almost exclusively by the fungal component. After allowance for the proportions of fungal and green algal components, only approximately 3 % of the expected proportion of secreted nitrogen is accumulated by the green algal cells. The implications of this on the possible theories describing the relationships existing in the lichen symbiosis are discussed.
