S ummary This is a reply to a suggestion that the characters used for assessing the relative primitiveness of dicotyledon families are merely adaptations to life in tropical rain‐forest and are not, therefore, reliable indicators of primitiveness. Arguments are put forward that rain‐forest plants should be expected to be primitive, regardless of the place of origin of angiosperms. Recent findings of palynologists are shown to give strong support to advancement index calculations.
