S ummary Ultraviolet absorption profiles were examined of alcoholic extracts of stigmatic surfaces of forty‐four species. The extracts of species showed characteristic absorption peaks, and batho‐chromic shifts on the addition of NaOH. In many cases the peaks corresponded to those of simple phenolic compounds or their derivatives. The possible use of the absorption profile as a taxonomic tool is discussed.
