S ummary Two pollen diagrams, one through Late‐Weichselian and early Flandrian sediments and the other through Flandrian sediments from sites on the western side of the Mainland, Orkney Islands are discussed. The results provide an outline of vegetation development from Late‐Weichselian time and imply that at its best the dominant vegetation has a birch and hazel shrubland. On the basis of present evidence the Late‐Weichselian and Flandrian floras were impoverished and the presence of pollen derived from trees of mixed‐oak‐forest does not necessarily imply that these trees grew locally.
