S ummary The concentrations of the major ions present in mature leaves of Potamogeton schweinfurthii and its natural pond waters were measured, together with membrane potential differences between the interior of leaf cells and the pond waters. Simple electrochemical interpretation of the data suggests active import of chloride, phosphate and sulphate, and active export of potassium and sodium ions. Calcium and magnesium ions may enter very slowly passively but may also be actively exported.
