S ummary The contents of glucosc‐6‐phosphate, fructose diphosphate, 3‐phosphoglycerate and phos‐phoenolpyruvate were substantially unchanged during the ‘climacteric’ rise in CO 2 output in apples. The mechanism of the ‘climacteric’ increase in respiration in apples thus appears to differ from that in bananas.
