S ummary The well‐known arrangements of Senecio species appear to be based on inadequate data. Observations on leaf hairs, achene hairs, corolla venation, pappus structure and ovarian crystal form are presented for forty‐five species. A classification based on these features bears little resemblance to the conventional view of the genus, but its taxonomic soundness is strikingly supported by considerations of gross leaf morphology and habit.
