S ummary Early stages in the development of the secondary cortex in stems of Lepidophloios kilpatrickensis indicate that the tissue originated as a meristematic zone three cells wide. Each cell of the zone underwent periclinal division to form a radial file of cells. It is suggested that in the mature secondary cortex each complete radial file represents the derivatives of three initial cells and that short files represent the derivatives of one, or two, initials.
