S ummary Plants of Rubus idaeus were collected from habitats of contrasting altitudes in Scotland and grown in Dundee. Subsequent observations suggested the presence of population differentiation in respect of time of bud‐burst and plant height, plants from more exposed situations being later to start growth in the spring and producing shorter canes with shorter internodes. The results are discussed in relation to the breeding system and physiological responses of the plants.
