S ummary Twelve species of algae from Bombay were analysed by quantitative paper chromatographic technique. The methods of preparation of protein‐hydrolysates, the resolving solvent system, Colour reagents and a modified colorimetric elution reagent have been described. In all, twenty amino acids were identified and estimated. From these ornithine is a rare record for marine algae, while hydroxyproline is a new record. The results obtained here compare favourably with those of other workers.
