Social contraception in naked mole‐rats and marmoset monkeys

This review summarizes some of the recent advances in our understanding of the social suppression of reproduction. The subject is considered mainly at the physiological level in two mammalian species which display social suppression of reproduction to an extreme degree: the eusocial naked mole‐rat, Heterocephalus glaber , and the common marmoset monkey, Callithrix jacchus . Such complete social control of reproduction provides useful models to study basic neuroendocrine and physiological mechanisms involved in mammalian reproduction.
