Smooth newts, Triturus vulgaris, collected from Karacabey, north‐west Turkey were found to be morphologically distinct from both T. u. vulgaris and T. u. kosswigi. Consequently, this has lead to the description of a new sub‐species Triturus vulgaris schmidtleri. Behavioural differences in the courtship display of this new sub‐species are described and comments included on body size, habitat and distribution range. A new definition is proposed for the term tail filament.
