The effectiveness of a ‘permanent’ marking technique developed for Giant Aldabra tortoises in 1969 is assessed. Eleven to 16 years after tagging, 59% of the marked tortoises on the west and south coasts of the Atoll had lost their tags. Half‐life of the tag is estimated to be less than 10 years and, hence, unacceptable given the long time for maturity and long life span of the Giant tortoise. A modification of the tagging technique is required.
