Using X‐ray diffractometry, the development of preferred orientation of the calcite was studied in the Aepyornis eggshell. As in the shells of the extant ratite species, a high degree of texture develops in which the (001) plane lies parallel to the shell surface. This texture then decreases gradually throughout the outer half of the shell.
