In the flat parts of a coastal plain on the Dutch Wadden island of Schiermonnikoog, the entire spider fauna aggregates in plant tussocks ( Carex distans L.) at the onset of winter. Spiders are known predators of other spiders, therefore we expected an avoidance of predation by spatial separation of the species. The sedge tussocks were divided into several zones, each of which was sampled for spiders. Spatial separation on a macroscale (between tussocks) as well as on a microscale (inside tussocks) was demonstrated.
