Removal of much of the functional region of the radula of Octopus vulgaris does not prevent the animal from drilling holes in mollusc shells. These drilling activities are carried out by a salivary papilla that lies just below the radula. The papilla is muscular and its anterior face is covered with very small teeth. It is now possible to say that the salivary papilla can function as an accessory radula.
