A general description is given of the respiratory system of six species of fish captured at depths about 1200 metres. Measurements made on the gill filaments are given and analysed in relation to body weight. It is concluded that the relatively small total filament length is probably correlated with an inactive mode of life and low levels of oxygen consumption.
