On the basis of scat analysis, the diet of the mongoose Herpestes auropunctatus is described for animals living in a variety of habitats on Viti Levu, Fiji. The species eats a wide variety of vertebrate, invertebrate and plant food. Although introduced to Fiji in an attempt to control rodents, the mongoose has had little success in this respect. However, as a result of predation it may have had an adverse effect on various members of the native fauna.
