The growth and degeneration of the pronephric system were examined at different larval and metamorphic stages in Bufo viridis viridis, Hyla arborea savignyi and Rana ridibunda ridibunda . It was found that the process of degeneration is sequentially similar to that of differentiation being in a cranio‐caudal order in the last two genera, but in the opposite direction in the genus Bufo. It is concluded that in these genera pronephric degeneration is closely related to the histology of the thyroid glands.
