The method of principal components is applied to data of the external measurements of the Humpback whale ( Megaptera novaeangliae ). The first two components are found to summarize the main features of the data and are used to compare differences between the sexes and of the time and locality of capture. Suggestions are made as to how a reduction in the number of characters measured may be achieved in subsequent studies.
