Summary.1 The gall‐midge, Oligotrophus oleariæ , attacking the New Zealand native shrub Shawia (Olearia) paniculata Cheesem. has been re‐classified as Oligotrophus oleariæ Mask. The midge causes damage only to the young buds of the plant, and does not attack the leaves, as was originally supposed. 2 The life‐history of the midge is described briefly. The larva is parasitized by two species of hymenopterous insects, Pteromalus sp. and Metaclisis oleariæ Mask. 3 A description of the externals of the larva, pupa, and imago is given, together with an account of the anatomy of the larva and the imago.
