SUMMARY The likelihood in linkage investigations can be expressed as a polynomial in the relevant recombination fractions. With polymorphic characters, this can be reduced to a product of separate factors for female and male recombinations, with only mild loss of information. With three generation data the polynomials take a specially simple form. Algorithms are given for finding maximum likelihood estimates and their standard errors.
