Summary The bias arising from ignoring the sib‐sib correlation ρ 88 in estimating the variance of a parent‐child regression coefficient is investigated algebraically and using Monte Carlo simulation. It is found that the true variance can be seriously underestimated for moderate values of ρ 88 . Recommendations are given for removing this bias.
