SUMMARY There are measurable differences in the average between the form of the palate in sibs of cleft lip cases (with or without cleft palate) and in the general population. Plausibly there are also differences in the shape of the dental arch and the profile of the face. All these differences are in a biologically reasonable direction. But they are not large enough on their own to allow definite identification of families at risk.
