SUMMARY Genetic models to describe the α‐thalassaemias are reviewed. Two of these, a one‐locus model with three alleles and a two‐loci model without linkage, are compared with population data from Thailand. Both models fit the observed data. Further tests are proposed to distinguish among these two and a third alternative, two linked a‐chain loci.
