On the possibility of segregation in the propensity to spontaneous abortion in the human female

Summary A method has been described of studying distributions of spontaneous abortions. For illustration, it has been applied to data which admittedly are not entirely adequate. The data can be fitted neither by single binomial expansions, nor by negative binomials; but they can be fitted by a double binomial. The interpretation is offered that women segregate into a small group of abortion‐prone, and a larger group of abortion‐resistant women. It is hoped shortly to publish details of a study investigating whether proneness to abortion may be an hereditary trait. This work was supported by a Canadian Federal Mental Health Grant.
