Summary A method is given for checking the agreement of the observed segregation of a character in family data, and the expected segregations calculated on the basis of Mendelian ratios and the Hardy‐Weinberg formulae. The method is only worked out in detail for the simple case of two alleles, one recessive to the other; in principle it could be extended to multiple alleles.
