One of the most useful and readily available technologies to aid emergency managers is the geographic information system (GIS). Many applications discussed in the GIS literature indicate the potential usefulness of GISs in emergency management. This paper will discuss two instances in which the authors used a GIS, in combination with simulation models, to address emergency preparedness concerns. 1 A sampling, though not an exhaustive survey, of other GIS applications in emergency management will also be presented.
